Buchanan Receives 2012 Athena Leadership Award

Published: December 1, 2012

Judy Buchanan, a McLean County Community Volunteer who serves as the Chairman of the Board for the Bloomington-Normal Transit System, was the recipient of the 2012 ATHENA® Leadership Award, presented by the McLean County Chamber of Commerce last night during a reception at the Brown Ballroom on the campus of Illinois State University.

Buchanan is known locally as an advocate, leader, and mentor for mental illness, Alzheimer’s, and developmental issues. As a member of the Illinois Commission on Mental Health and Development Disabilities, she provided significant input into the Mental Health Code for the State of Illinois which provides needed protection for the rights of Illinois citizens who are mentally ill. As a member of the Bloomington-Normal Public Transit Board, she became a leader in many significant changes including the creation of the Connect Transit system. Through these organizations and more, this nominee has been referred to by her peers as a fantastic mentor, guide and coach, developing ongoing supportive relationships to help other women deal with the challenges of being a caregiver.

“Judy is an outstanding leader in our community,” says Charlie Moore, the McLean County Chamber of Commerce President & CEO. “It comes as no surprise to us that she was nominated by her peers for this very prestigious award. Her commitment to our community is very diverse, from her advocacy efforts on mental health to her chairmanship of the Bloomington Normal Public Transit System, Judy Buchanan truly is a force for good in our community.”
