Young Receives Legacy Award at Annual Gala

Young Receives Legacy Award at Annual Gala

Published: February 13, 2012

When Evelyn Young travelled back to Bloomington from her new home in Memphis, Tennessee, she didn’t expect to be addressing the 2012 McLean County Chamber of Commerce Annual Gala from the stage. But that didn’t keep the former Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Bloomington-Normal from captivating the more than 500 attending community and business leaders as she accepted the Third Annual McLean County Chamber of Commerce Legacy of Excellence Award on Saturday, January 28 at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel and Conference Center.

“I am truly grateful for the years that I had in Bloomington-Normal to inspire the lives of the kids,” said Young, her normally-booming voice choked with emotion. She acknowledged the Boys & Girls Club board, staff and volunteers and made special mention of all those who had donated the Club at her behest because, smiled Young, “I think I am the biggest, begginest woman. And even though I live in Memphis now I want you all to know that I still beg for Bloomington.”

In addition to the Legacy of Excellence, five more Business Excellence Awards were presented to Chamber members that have achieved outstanding business performance, business distinctiveness, quality personalized service to customers and clients.

  • Shoe Shoe Baby women’s fashion boutique received the Doubletree by Hilton Micro Business Excellence Award;
  • The Coffee Hound was recognized with the Nicor Gas Small Business Excellence Award;
  • The Snyder Companies was honored with the Frontier Communications Large Business Excellence Award;
  • Midwest Fiber Recycling received the Corn Belt Energy Green Business Excellence Award; and
  • Junior Achievement of Central Illinois took home the Commerce Bank Non-Profit Agency Excellence Award.
