Leanna Bordner Recognized for a Legacy of Excellence
It is a true honor to recognize Leanna Bordner for her extraordinary leadership, service, and impact on both Illinois State University and the greater McLean County community.
Leanna is currently in her 33rd year at Illinois State University, where she serves as Chief Operating Officer and Senior Woman Administrator for Redbird Athletics. In this role, she oversees day-to-day operations, directly supervises eight athletic programs, and supports additional sports within the department. Her leadership has touched virtually every area of Redbird Athletics, ensuring operational excellence and a strong student-athlete experience.
Her influence extends well beyond campus. At the conference and national levels, Leanna has served on numerous committees, including the Missouri Valley Conference Hall of Fame Committee and multiple NCAA committees focused on rules, marketing, officiating, and basketball governance. Her involvement reflects both her expertise and her commitment to advancing collegiate athletics at every level.
On campus, Leanna contributes to a wide range of advisory and leadership councils dedicated to student success, diversity and inclusion, well-being, data stewardship, and strategic planning. Her voice and leadership continue to help shape the direction and priorities of Illinois State University.
Leanna is also the creative force behind several impactful and community-centered initiatives, including Cinco de Redbirds, Birds in the Burbs, Play4Kay, Red Hots, and Comm University. These programs have raised significant funds, strengthened community connections, and enhanced engagement across the region.
Her community involvement is equally remarkable. Leanna currently chairs the Oakdale Promise Council and serves on the Visit BN Sports Commission. She leads the Red Cross Evening of Stars and is an active member of Kiwanis and THRIVE Rotary. Throughout her career, she has also served on the boards of the Red Cross, YMCA, Easter Seals, and the McLean County Chamber of Commerce, where she was previously honored with the Athena Award.
Prior to joining Illinois State, Leanna spent 16 years as a collegiate basketball coach, including roles at Michigan State University, Indiana University, and Central Missouri State, where she contributed to a national championship-winning program. She holds degrees from Michigan State and Indiana and was a three-sport letterwinner during her collegiate career.
For more than three decades, Leanna Bordner has demonstrated unwavering dedication, visionary leadership, and a deep commitment to community impact. Her legacy of excellence continues to inspire those around her and strengthen the institutions and organizations she serves.
